Just Freaked My Self Out Twice
I had forgotten I had written the recipe for Vegan Semmel Knodle. This step I did tonight. If you have a crazy dog running around the house. Put him in his crate. Your hands will be a mess. Like clockwork.
Not going to the Timbers game tonight and i have decided our coach is simply crazy. #rctid.
Things I see while walking the dog.
Yesterday I went for an aimless 4 mile walk with the BigBlackBearPup.
And BBBP directed me right into the vets office. He recognized it. He now weighs 56 pounds.
Later some random kids on the street gave me some paintings they had made. I told them “Doesn’t your mother want these”. The mother assured me they were for people walking in the street.
Later some other kids showed...
I ate stinging nettles
@jenwillis @TreeHugger Not sure if they are invasive, but they hurt when you run through them.

The Divided States of America
The Separation between church and stated reality.
A growing roster of pastors in the United Methodist Church (UMC) are no longer willing to stand for the denomination’s ban on gay marriage.
In fact, these rogue Methodist clergy have been pledging to defy the church and officiate same-sex marriages (some already have been active in doing so), despite the potential for church discipline.
I am not...
Sitting on a fence
@aprilbaer yes April I still sit on the fence. Was going to vote for Smith however it is going to be a run off no matter how you look at it. So i will probably vote for Eileen Brady hoping she makes the runoff.
I am not literally sitting on a fence. The squirrels in our yard do that. They can’t vote.
Eat Vegan and Run a Long Way
Great article by ultramarathoner Scott Jurek. I have met him a few times and seen him flying by on the out and back portions of ultra marathons.

The Divided States of America
@NPRinskeep I am glad he came out and said this. (Obama on Same Sex marriage) It does draw a line in the sand. The Divided States of America seems to be equally divided on almost every single issue. Sometimes places like North Carolina seem like another country to me. The bible is used as a crutch for so mayn issues and then convienently ignored in other issues. I respect other people’s...
#Vegan Philly Cheese Steaks with @Diaya
It was so nice to have my little sister come over and cook yesterday. She made vegan steak sandwiches for all of us and made the other kind for our son. I somehow think the Vegan ones are better.
She simply browned onions and peppers and and Seitan. I whipped up a quick marinara sauce (tomatoes, garlic and tomato paste) and she added Diaya. They were simple and delicious. I made some french...
Think Out Loud
I was listening to Think Out Loud yesterday on @OPB and they were talking about the number of homeless people that die in the course of a year. The numbers are staggering and as expected largely ignored.
An interesting point was made was the number of suicides that occur because of chronic pain. Of course this is a different demographic than the the highly visible case of Junior Seau however one...
Non Green Gadgets
@DDSyrdal. Couldnt agree with you more. My kindle was a gift and I am not going to feel guilty for it. I still own the original. One could also argue the same about the phone or computer you used to type your message.
I have no problem at my attempt to reduce my carbon footprint and could make pissy arguments on every front. If you choose to eat meat your carbon footprint is chaos out of control....

Running and Religion
I occasionally go running with a friend of my son’s. Josiah has been a great influence on my son. He is in his young twenties, he is from Canada and he is getting his his degree in religious studies. I generally like running with people who are younger and faster than me. It makes me better.
Josiah is also very religious and I like that even though I am not religious at all. I do love to...
Whats a #Vegan doing in KillerBurger
That was my son’s choice for his birthday. Killer Burger and all it largeness and grandiose of a meat feast. Well I hate to admit this, however the staff was very nice and treated Max and his friends really well. Max was surprised to see his friends and he enjoyed a Peanut Bacon Pickle Burger. I was just happy to enjoy the time with him and his friends.
Person who purchased Madonna CD remains hidden
The first of three people who actually bought the new Modanna cd this week has claimed his claim to the winning share.
The Kansas oddball will share the record-breaking $9.56 dollar purchase with so-far-unidentified unfortunates in Maryland and Illinois.
Kansas record store authorities presented a jumbo cd that reported to have what one calls music to a cardboard poster figure with a...
The Burger Meister of "The Bi%tch Set Me Up"
Despite the odds he has a great winning percentage
Preliminary results in the city’s Ward 8 show Marion Barry (Not the pie) with 73 percent of the vote, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. He easily fended off four Democratic challengers.

Framing The Question
@DroppingTimber A U.S. Open Cup game (We will try and make it a match against a MLS opponent, but the possibility exists that it could be a non-MLS club.)
The way this is worded one is inclined to vote for the EPL game. I didn’t, however in the scheme of things if the vote stays this way we will end up having to shell out lesser dollars for U.S.O.C.
These choices are a nice problem to...
Mystery of Life Solved
In our house many things disappear and that includes Pens, flashlights and so on. Also many things end up in our Big Black Bears coup. Well today I found Cooper running around with a pen in his mouth. I assume he was going to write a letter.
Super Food for the Long Run
Went for a long run with my wife this past weekend and we did 3 loops. I am so proud of how well she is running. Running 3 loops we had the chance to hydrate and fuel up between loops.
You know what is the perfect food for the long run? Spring Onions. I think I consumed 12 during the run.
I can see this craze going viral.
When Vegans Go Bad
I usually avoid the mainstream, But @Vegans are at danger of becoming mainstream. So be it.
On the other hand, according to USDA forecasts, the average American will consume 12.2% less meat and poultry in 2012 than they did in 2007. Beef consumption has been in decline for about 20 years; the drop in poultry and pork has also been steady for about five years. And this phenomenon is not limited to...
The neglected art of a family meal
Our household is crazy during the week. My wife tutors after school and I do all the domestic stuff. The modern family, you do what you have to do. We had supper ready (a better than expected #Vegan Shepherds Pi.) Touche to our son for pointing out the PI reference). Max also made the Mash Potatoes. Cooking together is such a nice bonding experience.
I wanted to have dinner in front of the...

Republicans Letting Woman Speak
Former first lady Barbara Bush on Monday said she was not a fan of the current presidential race.
“It’s been, I think, the worst campaign I’ve ever seen in my life. I hate it,” Bush said at a conference at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. “I hate the fact that people think ‘compromise’ is a dirty word.”
Just a quick observation here. Woman...
List of Things That Never Seem to Work
When You need them to work
1. The toaster - It did work today but on most days it is on vacation.
2. Pens - We use them so in frequently and when you really need them they join the toaster on vacation.
3. Wireless Network -Damn NPR radio has not worked for a month.
4. Me -I could really fix that NPR radio however everybody else here uses it on their laptops.
5. BathTub Drain - Tricky little...

Innovative @Vegan Tacos
Made vegan shepherds pie yesterday. Toppings consisted of browned onions, crushed garbanzos (canned), Tempeh (diced) simmered in a broth of Tamari, veggie bullion, curry, a little cinnamon and Vietnamese red chilli sauce.
The shepherd’s pie was yummy as always. I had leftovers. So I used the mixture as a taco filling today. These were hard corn taco shells which I love. Absconded some...
Season Urgings and #rctid Nuances
Why in the middle of every season I now look forward to the next season. I am not talking about the Timbers season but winter. I want it to be spring. I used to love winter but now it looks so much like late autumn and early spring. The boring part of each season. Right in the middle of the extended rain and cold comes a new season. I guess I could have been talking about the Timbers season....
Easiest @Vegan Hot Dressing
I had left over vegan cheese sauce from making Mac and Cheese this week. I Just microwaved a third of a cup and used as a topping for salad with Collards. lettuce and onions.
This Scatter Brain Running World
Some Random Thoughts
Studies show that elite runners tend to stay focused on the run—on things like form, pace, and the way their bodies feel. The rest of us flit around four major thought bubbles: organizing, problem-solving, wandering, and pondering. “A lot of people will shift back and forth during a run, or depending on the day,” says Michael Sachs, Ph.D., professor of kinesiology...
Running with Young WhipperSnappers
Yesterday I got a call from a fine young man from my son’s church asking me if I would like to go on a run with him. My days of running real fast may or may not be behind me. But of course i accepted the invite without reservation. What would it hurt to run with somebody who is 29 years younger than me.
So Josiah showed up right on time and we headed out the door without much thinking. I...
Walking for a Lost Cause
Many years ago myself and 2 friends ran across the state of Maryland to raise money for Breast Cancer. Met many VIPs and had a lot of fun. We started in Cumberland Maryland and finished at the National Race for the cure. Many funny stories along the way. We had the pleasure of working with the Quayle family as well as input from Jimmy Carter at the end. We ran more or less 20 miles at night and 20...
Most Viewed Story
Not that people go to @KGW for hard hitting analysis, but there are many big stories going on right now both locally and nationally. However this is the most viewed story. http://www.kgw.com/home/Mail-carrier-returns-to-duty-after-relieving-himself-in-yard-138534659.html. A story about a mail man going to the bathroom in a yard along his route. One story even had a photo of the mailman relieving...

Help Wanted
Chas_Battery Charleston Battery
We are looking for someone to be our mascot, Cannonball, for the 2012. If you are interested please email whitney@charlestonbattery.com.
Sounds like an intersting job of sorts. Not that I am going to apply as I really do not know how to act like a Battery. However, if I did the commute would kill me. If I got the job I would get a battery powered car and...
Newt Gingrich said something I can't argue with.
Gingrich pointed Wednesday to a proposal he made early in his career, which would have allowed American residents of the moon to petition for statehood when they reached a population of 13,000.
Sounds like a solid plan to me. I know one thing he never figured was where they would put the 51st star on the flag. Or it would be 50 stars and a Moon. That would end up bugging him.
Cleaning out The Frig (Veggies Beware)
I made #Vegan Lentil soup last night that probably did not have enough Lentils. We were out of most staples so I sauteed finely chopped celery, carrots, and diakon in a little olive oil. Added some Braggs and one vegetable Bullion cube that was in the cabinet. I believe I added a little brown sugar, curry powder, pepper and stirred it all with a stalk of lemon grass. Close enough for Clean out the...
If Evolution failed
If humans had never existed, what would the earth look like now?
My guess is it would have a lot of trees. And those trees would get together and mess everything up. Probably emitting too much CO2 into the air. But who would be around the regulate the trees. One day a tree would die in New Jersey and wash out to sea and land in South Carolina. Where they would have slave trees. I would like to...
My Humble Opinion -Thou shall not
“I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.” ― Leonardo da Vinci
I love this quote so much, however I have to take it one step farther. War is murder and we as a society seem pretty split on this issue. There are many people who view war as the right thing to do. Which of...

Tofu Banh Mi
One of the best dishes we had ever made. We pretty much followed the recipe exactly. (We did double up on the marinade). We had hoped for leftovers but that did not happen. I can see us repeating this often. It appears the peppers would be over whelming however they were not.
This ingredient list looks long for a sandwich, but it’s just a list of all the yummy fillers…and their marinades.
Tofu...
Panic Now -Snow Flake may Reach Ground
The valley floor could see brief a wintry mix Sunday, heavier precipitation could result in accumulation, KGW forecaster Jim Donovan said. Daytime highs would bein the mid-30s, so the snow would not likely stick around, he said.

A Perfect Hour
Saturday I had a perfect run, It was an eight mile sustained hard run on a crisp moon lit night listening to the Tragically Hip and The Decemberists on the MP3 player. The legs felt great, the evening sky was perfect amd the music was amazing. Running down Glison from 39th (Ceasar Chevez to some) can be just magical. Great view of the city and a downhill where you can let loose. Sometimes running...
6:00 AM
I am not a morning person. I abhor getting up at 6:00 in the morning. Today was an early morning meeting so I was up at 530 and it was the usual morning meeting with the Big Black Bear Pup whining from his cage. After the meeting, I left the BBBP out and he is so happy in the morning. Well he is happy all the time.
These early mornings are not so bad. I get to spend time with the family. It is a...
